A large seal from Tyre
Lot 1868
Theodoros, apo hypaton (?) and kommerkiarios (of Tyre), 610-641. Seal (Lead, 34 mm, 30.00 g). Enthroned figures of Heraclius, in center, of Heraclius Constantine, on the left, and of Heraclonas, on the right, each wearing crown and holding globus cruciger. Rev. Textile imprint. Seyrig 147. A large and impressive piece. Traces of corrosion, otherwise, fine.

The seal in the Seyrig collection probably shares the same obverse die, but like our example, it is poorly preserved and does not permit a reading of the legend. Seals of this type, naming one or more 'kommerkiarioi' or tax-collectors, were attached to sacks of goods and usually belonged to kommerkiarioi of Tyre.
